Manufacturer: Museum of Modern Art
This black umbrella appears to be nothing special, until you open it and reveal a blue sky on inside.
Tibor Kalman

Tibor Kalman was born in Budapest but moved with his family to New York when he was 8. He founded M&Co in 1979 and brought his restless intellectual curiosity and subversive wit to everything he worked on — from album covers for the Talking Heads to the redevelopment of Times Square. Kalman incorporated visual elements other designers had never associated with successful design, and used his work to promote his radical politics (as a student at New York University, he left for a time to support the Communists in Cuba).
In 1991, he closed M&Co to create the magazine Colors for Benetton. With Colors he found the perfect outlet for his visual and political ideas – most notably the issue in which he digitally manipulated photographs of people such as Queen Elizabeth and Spike Lee to change their race.
He left Colors in 1997 and reopened M&Co after he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
