Honey-Pop Chair
Manufacturer: Tokijin Yoshioko Inc.
The honey-pop chair is made from just 120 sheets of thin glassine paper. There’s no metal, wood, or screws. The sheets of paper are glued together in a way that, when expanded, create a sturdy honeycomb structure. The chair arrives flat and is less than an inch thick. it is pulled open like an accordion, and then someone sits on it to form the seat.
surprisingly, when the honeycomb paper is compressed it has enough strength to support
the weight of a person.
Tokujin Yoshioka

Tokujin Yoshioka (Japanese, born 1967) graduated from Tokyo’s Kuwasawa Design School in 1986. He worked for Shiro Kuramata and issey miyake before setting up his own studio in 2000. At the 2002 milan Furniture Fair, Yoshioka released his now famous Honey-Pop Chair, made of expandable honeycomb paper. His work is often described as ethereal, and Issey Miyake has remarked, “I believe that he is at his best when he makes skillful use of air, light, and sometimes even gravity.” Yoshioka’s aim is to evoke emotion
and speak to the senses, but experimentation with materials and technology is also a driving force in his work, as in his second nature chair, grown from crystals in a transparent tank. in 2007 he received the Designer of the Year Award at Design Miami, and in 2010 he was named one of the “100 Most Creative People in Business” by Fast Company magazine. his work is in the Museum of Modern Art and the Cooper-hHewitt, National Design Museum in
New York; the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris; the Victoria &
Albert Museum in London; and the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am
rRhein, Germany.
